While Jon Patton may be in the hands of the world’s best surgeons, the seriousness of his knee injury has been enough to scare away the punters, with GWS’s prize recruit drifting in Rising Star betting with online bookmaker Sportsbet.

Starting as a $21 chance, his odds have drifted on the back of his injury news, and he’s now priced at $41.

“Usually the number 1 draft pick is a clear favourite, but there is no doubt his injury has scared away the punters,” said sportsbet.com.au’s Shaun Anderson.

“There is some value at $41. He already has a body for AFL football and even if he misses the first few games and finishes off the season well he has every chance of winning the Rising Star award.”

Gold Coast’s Josh Caddy has been the big mover in the Rising Star market, backed from $51 into $21.

“Caddy already has a year of senior football under his belt and he showed last year that he has a big future ahead of him. Coming off another pre-season, if he can find that consistency in his game he could really be up there at the end of the year.”

In a surprise bet, one punter thinks that relative unknown GWS player Anthony Miles will be the shock winner, placing $25 on him at $501 to collect $12,525.

Carlton’s Kane Lucas is still favourite to take out the award at $7.00 ahead of the Western Bulldogs’ Mitch Wallis ($8.00).
