ACADEMY AWARDS: HEATH LEDGER NO OSCAR JOKER
Sportingbet Australia is betting on the late Heath Ledger’s chances of becoming the second actor in history to be honoured with a posthumous Oscar for his portrayal of The Joker in The Dark Knight.
Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said it would be a fitting tribute if Ledger was awarded the Best Supporting Actor Oscar.
“With the pending release of The Dark Knight and the national interest in one of our finest actors, there has been significant interest from punters which has prompted Sportingbet Australia to open the market, ” Sullivan said.
“Ledger looked unfortunate to miss out with Brokeback Mountain.
“He was a fine Australian actor and we’d love to see him win such a prestigious award.”
But Sullivan warned punters that history was against Ledger winning.
“Only another Australian in Peter Finch has won an acting Oscar posthumously and the likes of James Dean never managed it,” said Sullivan.
“And The Dark Night is not the kind of movie that the Academy usually recognises but in saying that, all reports are that Ledger’s performance was magnificent again.”
The Dark Knight is due to be released in Australian Cinemas on July 17.
