CYCLE:Gasparotto wins Amstel Gold cycling race
Philippe Gilbert had led the main pack leading to the final climb in pursuit of Katusha’s former world champion, Oscar Freire, who broke away six kilometres from finish.
But Freire gave up just metres away from the finishing line as Gasparotto sprinted past.
Gasparotto became the first Italian to win the Dutch classic since Michele Bartoli in 2002.
The 256-kilometre race, from the southern city of Maastricht to Valkenburg, was first held in 1966.
